The Haywood Waterways Association (HWA) seeks to educate the residents of Haywood County on the importance of protecting the waterways as a natural, economic and recreational resource to be conserved and enhanced for this and future generations. HWA works with public agencies, conservation interests, businesses, community groups, and public and private land owners, to develop and implement a strategy for the conservation and improvement of the water quality and habitat of the Pigeon River and its tributaries in Haywood County.

The North Carolina Division of Soil & Water Conservation provides programs, technical services and educational outreach promoting voluntary natural resource management and conservation on the private lands of North Carolina through a non-regulatory, incentive-driven approach. Natural Resources Conservation Service is a federal agency that helps you help the land, which is our mission, “Helping People Help the Land”. Programs provide technical and financial assistance to help you make beneficial decisions about natural resource management, to install conservation practices, to conduct natural resource inventory and assessment to establish the best conservation plans, and develop and distribute a wide array of technology pertaining to resource assessment, conservation planning, and conservation system installation and evaluation. The French Broad River Watershed Education and Training Center has been initiated to provide educational programming to landowners, concerned citizens, natural resource managers, and public officials in Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Haywood and Madison Counties. The training center works in coordination with NC State University's Soil and Water Environmental Technology Center. Educational programs offered through the Training Center include: vegetated riparian buffers, streambank stabilization, natural channel design, livestock exclusion and watering systems, pasture management, agricultural and urban stormwater runoff management, and erosion control.
